Knowing what skin type you have is critical to selecting the proper skincare, shaving and grooming products. The guide below can assist you in determining which products will be appropriate to use as well as what the best skin care routine will be for great results. Results may vary depending upon your specific needs and the products that you use on a daily basis.

NORMAL SKIN

DISTINCTIVE FEATURES OF NORMAL SKIN:

-The skin is well balanced and is neither oily nor dry.

-Even textured and rarely suffers from blemishes.

-Looks smooth, healthy and clear.

-Normal skin does not feel dry or oily.

-Pores are visible but not large or clogged.

-After a wash it feels smooth and comfortable.

-At midday it still looks fresh and clean.

-Only occasionally break out in spots.

DAILY REGIMEN FOR NORMAL SKIN:

-Keep it clean - wash with a good quality facial wash.

-Use a light moisturizer at least once a day.

-Cool with a refreshing toner as needed.

-Follow this regimen twice daily – morning and before bed.

-Use a gentle exfoliating facial scrub once or twice a week to maintain the healthy balance.

OILY SKIN

DISTINCTIVE FEATURES OF OILY SKIN:

-Oily and shiny appearance especially in the T-zone area (forehead, nose and chin).

-Prone to blackheads, pimples and blemishes.

-Pores are often large and visible and can become clogged with dirt.

-Skin looks dull and patchy.

-Skin texture is often very thick and coarse.

-Skin feels fine after washing, but looks shiny a few hours later.

-Often break out in blemishes.

-Skin may have fine lines or wrinkles.

DAILY REGIMEN FOR OILY SKIN:

-Wash your face twice daily with a good quality face wash.

-Use a toner twice a day to help refresh and balance your skin.

-Moisturize as needed with an oil-free moisturizer that will leave the skin matt. Sometimes your skin will produce excess oil if it is dehydrated to compensate for the lack of moisture.

-Use an exfoliating facial scrub once or twice a week with a facial scrub.

-Use a clay facial mask once a week. It will help absorb that excess oil and remove impurities and dirt from your pores. Over time it may also help to reduce the appearance of large pores, as it helps to remove the blockages that make the pores appear larger.

-Remember to avoid products with harsh ingredients or those that will over dry and over stimulate the skin – as this can cause the problem to get worse.

DRY SKIN

DISTINCTIVE FEATURES OF DRY SKIN:

-Looks red and patchy and feels dry to the touch.

-Feels tight and sometimes sore, especially in winter.

-The pores are very fine.

-Dry skin has a thin and papery texture.

-After a wash it feels tight, as though it is too small for the face.

-By midday flaky patches appear.

-Hardly ever break out in spots.

-Fine lines may appear around the eyes/eyelids.

DAILY REGIMEN FOR DRY SKIN:

-Wash with a gentle cleanser twice daily, normally morning and before bed.

-Use a good Moisturizer after washing. One with SPF 15 protection is recommended if you are outside a lot.

-Use a gently face scrub once a week to help promote the production of oil and to remove dead skin cells.

-A night cream will assist the skin to try and repair itself while you sleep.

-Use a hydrating mask once a week.

-Drink plenty of water!

COMBINATION SKIN

CHARACTERISTICS OF COMBINATION SKIN:

-Shows signs of both oily skin and dry skin on areas of your face.

-Combination skin is normal with a few dry patches and a few oily patches.

-Dryness is usually on the cheeks, with oiliness on the T-zone.

-After a wash some areas feel dry and some smooth.

-By the midday the T-zone is shiny.

-Often break out in spots in the T-zone.

-Fine lines around the eyes.

-Large pores usually appear on the nose.

DAILY REGIMEN FOR COMBINATION SKIN :

-Use different products on the different areas of your face depending on the problem. Follow the instructions on each particular product.

-Avoid ‘drying’ products that will be too harsh on your skin, as well as products that are too ‘greasy’ and not suited for the oily areas.

-Use a gentle cleanser on the dry areas and a refreshing toner on the oily areas.

SENSITIVE SKIN

CHARACTERISTICS OF SENSITIVE SKIN:

-Appears red and patchy and can also be flaky and dry.

-React to weather conditions and many skincare products.

-The cheek area can look very red with broken capillaries (small red veins).

-Sensitive skin can be easily irritated and burns easily in direct sunlight.

-Typical reactions are itching, burning, chafing and stinging.

-After a wash a wash it feels dry and itchy in places. -By midday there are flaky patches and some redness.

-Occasionally break out in spots.

DAILY REGIMEN FOR SENSITIVE SKIN:

-Use products which do not contain alcohol, harsh chemicals and are not perfumed.

-For Shaving use a gel instead of a cream. Follow with an aftershave.

-Use a gentle face wash twice daily.

-Moisturize after washing.

-Pay attention to the products you buy. Try to do a small patch test first before applying it all over your face.

-Avoid soap as it can be quite a drying product. Rather opt for products developed for sensitive skin.
